I'm finding that Stewart's manner of presentation and the chosen examples, problems, solutions, and graphics, are all well designed toward the end that students actually understand the beautiful "concepts and context" that form the soul of this magnificent subject. The book is actually the last six chapters of Stewart's larger "Calculus : Concepts and Contexts" (2nd edition, I think - the one going for around $139). I bought the book new for $45 only a few weeks ago through Amazon andĢ. This really is an excellent presentation of multivarible calculus! The "but." in the review title relates to two facts:ġ. The definitions are precise and the problems create an ideal balance between conceptual understanding and algebraic skills. In addition to his clear exposition, Stewart also creates well thought-out problems and exercises. All concepts are presented in the classic Stewart style: with simplicity, character, and attention to detail. In CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, this well respected author emphasizes conceptual understanding - motivating students with real world applications and stressing the Rule of Four in numerical, visual, algebraic, and verbal interpretations. The book integrates the use of the CD throughout by using icons that show students when to use the CD to deepen their understanding of a difficult concept.
